South Hams District Council (SHDC) is advising users of the Lower Ferry Dartmouth to expect delays due to craft maintenance work and safety inspections.

A Spokesperson for the council said: “Anyone planning to use the Dartmouth Lower Ferry this autumn is encouraged to allow a little extra time while regular maintenance and safety checks are carried out.”

From Thursday October 29 until Sunday December 13 2026, the Hauley VI tugboat and Tom Avis float will have their annual refits and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) inspections. Therefore, the Lower Ferry will run with one ferry during this time.

This regular work helps keep the ferries safe and reliable, so passengers can continue to travel with confidence.

South Hams District Council understands how much residents, businesses and visitors rely on the ferry between Dartmouth and Kingswear. Extra staff will therefore be on board while one ferry is running, helping to keep the service as safe and efficient as possible.

South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Economic Development, Cllr John Birch, said: “The Lower Ferry is an important part of everyday life for many people. This essential work will help ensure the ferries are well maintained and ready for the year ahead, and we are grateful to passengers for their understanding while it is carried out.”

Journeys may take a little longer, especially at busier times, so passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and show patience and kindness to the ferry team working hard to keep everyone moving.

The dates may need to change depending on MCA availability and anything found during the inspections. If the timetable changes, the Council will share an update.
