On Sunday, July 15, Dart Gig Club’s youngest rowers took the long journey to Hayle, Cornwall, to take part in the Under-14 County Championships.

Despite being only 13, a year younger than most of the other crews, they did remarkably well, reaching the quarter-finals and finishing 12th out of 35 crews, most of which hailed from Cornwall.

The event takes place on Copperhouse Pool, an artificial lake with very little tide.

The races comprised one-way sprints of approximately 1,000m with three crews in each race.

In relentless sunshine they raced three times, winning their first heat convincingly against Brixham and Portreath, so going through automatically to the second round, where they came second to Caradon A, beating Helford.

They qualified to go into the quarters as one of the fastest second-placed crews.

The competition was finally won by Fowey A.
