Dartmouth Golf Club men’s section

From sunshine to hailstones the size of marbles, buggy bashing and outrageous scoring, Wednesday’s circus had it all writes John Garner!

While most of us were concentrating on playing golf, Arthur Carr was having a little adventure all on his own.

Somehow he managed to crash his buggy into the fence on the third. The force of it threw him out on to the road and cut his head quite badly, so he was taken back to the clubhouse from where he was given due care and attention and was reluctantly persuaded to go to Totnes hospital.

After being treated there, the first thing Arthur did was to make his way back to the club to pay his £4 entry fee, what a gent!

High handicaps prevailed in the prizes, where Barry O’Shea, playing off 21, won the front nine with 23 and Graham Burton, off 22, won the back with 21.

The star of the day, though, was captain Kevin Eighteen. Two days earlier Kevin was in hospital having heart surgery to have two stents fitted. He then rocks up to play in the circus and has to play off 11 due to previous wins. He has four blobs but wins with 40 points, a-maze-ing!

The Saturday mixed circus witnessed a milestone as for the first time in its history a lady golfer won a section; Chris Mushens won the front nine with 20, well done Chris.

The day, though, belonged to yours truly. I had recently made a trip to Wrangaton to get Stuart Barrett to change my putter grip. This poved a good move, didn’t miss one putt and scored 38 points.

There was amusement on the 14th tee with Dave Scanlan. His play was getting worse by the minute and the silence on the tee was making him nervous so he asked someone to make some noise or give him some advice.

‘Make sure you go through it was heard’ – whack out of bounds ; then Rob Knight said: ‘Now you’ve got to go through it again!’

Also on Saturday Dartmouth hosted Wrangaton in the thrd round of the Dartmoor League.

Wrangaton fielded a strong side but could only manage a half.

Noticeable victories were Andy Lennon and Joe Turner who won 5-4, the half was secured on the last by Gordon Kidd, who made a great par after being two down with three to play. The other winning pair were Roger Mawson and Paul Dunkerley.
