ANOTHER week with no ladies’ competitions to report on at Dartmouth GC - a sad fact that there hasn’t been a single dry Tuesday since the beginning of the year!
The men were luckier, managing a Foursomes competition the following day. Played as a Medal, the damp conditions did little to help and only one pair managed to beat par.
Rob Knight & Barrie O’Shea (71) won from Nigel Osborne & Trevor Pretty (74) and John Cousins & John Garner (78).
Having already lost two rounds of the men’s Winter League to weather, there was much relief when the greenkeepers managed to open the course for round five on Saturday.
It took quite a while for Edd Mitchell to breathe a sigh of relief - players in the Mixed Stableford were quite surprised to see Edd running down the path from the sixth hole with a selection of clubs in his hand. A flat tyre had left him stranded and resulted in his partner playing alone for the first four holes.
Matt Young is made of strong stuff and held the fort admirably, parring two of the holes and managing points on all of them. Edd and Matt played well (41pts) but had to settle for second place behind Keith Sexton and Richie Ogle who were finding pars and birdies on many holes (43pts).
Given that there were rain showers throughout play, all those finishing are to be commended.
Having lost two rounds, the league will now be decided on the best three scores from five.
Saturday’s top two pairs are topping the table with a ten-point lead, but the teams below are still in contention so plenty of opportunity to get into a top four position and progress to the semi-final stage.
A Mixed Stableford was running alongside the Winter League but many didn’t finish owing to the downpours. Steve Blackie (32pts), Lee Marels (29pts) and Rob Knight (26pts) were the only three to make it to the 18th.
