I saw Teddy Cranmer standing alone at the dedication of the new war monument in Royal Avenue Gardens to the American soldiers who passed this way heading off for Normandy in the Second World War, and it was obvious he was aggrieved by someone or something.

Sure, the wording might be a little confused, but a lot of fine young American men died helping to liberate this country, Europe and the world beyond, as did many others from many nationalities, so let’s not muddy the water and except this great honour bestowed upon our ­little town by the US, as it is meant.
