The ever-popular midweek circus attracted a large field of players again and to insure everyone would get in before dark, a two-tee start was arranged writes John Garner.

The opening tee shot on the 10th is far more difficult than the one on the first, but that didn't faze Mario Aresti, as he won the back nine with a solid 19 points.

Sid Davis, the intrepid trumpeter with the band Sax Appeal, has not only been puffing his cheeks out, he can also puff his chest out too this week as he won the front nine with 21 points and shared the overall win with Barry O'Shea on 34.

There were no twos, so as tradition dictates the money in the pot went to the captain's charity.

As I arrived at the clubhouse for the Wednesday circus I was approached by a member, who told me about the latest incident regarding a certain Mr R. M. Wotton and his brand new trolley.

He'd been thinking of treating himself for some time and decided to go for it last Monday.

He parted with his hard-earned money and took the trolley outside to assemble it according to the instructions.

As he turned the power on, it took off at a smart pace, but in ever-decreasing circles.

Try as he might he just could not get it to go straight, so he took it back to complain, at which point it was pointed out that he had not engaged the front locking nut securely, so the front wheels were loose and that was the cause of the problem.

Slightly embarrassed at this, he made his way to the tee and was heard to say: 'Well, there's one good thing about it, at least John Garner doesn't know.'

The weather was kind to all on Saturday for the first round of the winter league; it stayed dry for most of the day, enabling some cracking golf to be played.
