The last board event of the year was played on Sunday, October 26 writes John Garner.

The brainchild of ex-captain Geoff Penhale, the Olympic Tankard was won by Mark Beal and Mike Whitelaw with 34, second Dean Raspin and Steve Blackie 34, losing on the back nine, and third was Geoff Penhale and Alan Goldthorpe 33.

The Yorkshireman Alan kept chastising the Welshman Geoff for missing crucial putts, but all was forgiven on the 18th as there are no apologies in this format.

Geoff was very pleased on the day as all sections of the club were represented.

The Wednesday circus was abandoned after 13 holes as fog made play impossible.

Rob Waye won the front nine with 23, there were three twos, all on the third, by Phil Brooking, Chris Penhale and Bob Wotton.

On Saturday the monthly medal was held, not everyone's favourite format but winter rules were introduced, giving a little respite.

Sorry Mr Owen, but I've got to mention your room mate in France, Mr Wotton again, remember he lost his buggy to the woods in Landerneau, well he lost his electric buggy into the hedge on the ninth this week.

He was asked to go and see if the green was clear and as he walked forward he forgot to turn the power off, so off went his trolley and crashed into the hedge.

Never mind Bob, perhaps you'll have a quiet week this week, had to be mentioned though.

John Wood let the game get to him on the 14th, he was so disgusted with his score and performance that he threw his ball across the green.

Unfortunately it hit a tree and bounced straight back at him. Oh the joys of a medal, eh.

Roger Mawson has been away for several years and taken a break from golf, but has recently returned to the club with new vigour and is back to winning ways.

He won the medal with a sound 76, second Mike Whitelaw 77, third on countback Kevin Eighteen 77, fourth Joe Turner 78 and fifth Mark Beal 80.

To complete the weekend, a mixed friendly was played this Sunday. The winners were Jan Cousins and Rob Knight with 35, second Jan Brooking and John Cousins 31, third Marilyn Lucas and Brian Mushens 29.
