Congratulations to our junior team, who reached the finals of the West Devon Junior Golf League on Monday.

The competition is played in two groups, with nine teams entered from eight clubs. Despite having only a small membership, our team came second in the group phase, allowing them to proceed through to the semi-finals, which were held at Stover Golf Club.

Team coach Tracy Loveys said she is very proud of the team, which is having a fantastic run of form. Their semi-final match was against Thurlestone, which went right down to the wire, finished with a 19-hole playoff.

Winning the match, Bigbury went through to the final, which was played that afternoon against a strong team from Staddon Heights.

Sadly Bigbury’s winning streak was not to continue, although the team came away proudly with the runners-up trophy – a great effort.

With a good score of 41 points, Gordon Harper (17) took the top spot

to win the men’s August midweek stableford competition. Pete Cook (16) claimed second place when he recorded a score of 40 points, while Alan Germain (20) took third place with 38 points on countback from Terry Moore, who also scored 38 points. Gordon, Pete and Alan also took the top three places in division two.

Will Scarlett (12) was the winner in division one when he scored 37 points. Five players came in with 35 points, but it was Stuart Green (14) who came in second, on countback from third-placed Paul Weedon (14) and edging Adam Keates (4), Gary Crann (13) and Paul Fleming (12) out of contention.

As a result of their great scores, both Gordon and Pete saw their handicaps cut.

The ladies also played their mid-month stableford competition this week, and it was Karen Graddon (15) who won with 36 points. Sandy Lyon (26) came in second with 33 points and Pam Goode (22) took third place on countback from Christine Price (28) and Brooke Graddon (32), with all three racking up 32 points.

Ladies’ captain Melanie Adcock

was delighted to report that Bigbury member Jo Shorrocks was part of the Devon team that recently won the South West Seniors Strokeplay Championship.

Jo also won the individual scratch competition – she was four shots ahead of her nearest rival, a player from Gloucestershire. This was the inaugural competition, and hopefully it will be staged in Devon next time round.

Well done Jo and the Devon team.
