PLYMOUTH Argyle picked up their first league point of the season after battling to a 1-1 draw at Wycombe Wanderers - but Head Coach Tom Cleverley was left wondering what might have been.

Argyle were the stronger side in the opening 45 minutes at Adams Park and deservedly took the lead through Will Evans, who scored his first goal for the Greens.

They appeared to have doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Evans raced through and found the net again, only for the assistant referee’s flag to rule the goal out for offside.

Subsequent scrutiny appeared to suggest Evans had timed his run correctly, leaving Argyle to rue another key decision.

Wycombe responded strongly after the break and levelled when defender Connor Taylor headed home from a free-kick.

Argyle were also denied what Cleverley described as a “stonewall penalty” after Bradley Ibrahim went down inside the area.

Despite the frustrations, Cleverley praised his players for their performance.

“I couldn't be prouder of the group, to be honest,” he said. “The way they fought for the shirt, fought for the badge, left everything out there.

“You can prepare a team all you want throughout the week, but if they’ve got a stop button, then it’s difficult to get through games like this with a result. I thought their application was outstanding.”

Cleverley believes the result was a fair reflection of the contest, but felt Argyle had been unfortunate in the decisive moments.

“It is very, very unfortunate the linesman’s given Evo offside for his second goal of the day. We just have to keep working, keep dedicating our lives to it and hope that the poor refereeing decisions will even themselves out.”

Evans’ performance was one of the major positives for Argyle, with Cleverley backing the forward to become a regular goalscorer.
