On Friday, October 16 there is an opportunity to find out what it is really like to transport aid from Devon to the Ukraine.
A talk is being held called ‘Human Stories from Ukraine’ at 6pm for a 6.30pm start at Stoke Fleming Church.
The event is being presented by Adam, a volunteer from Ukrainian Action in Stoke Gabriel and introduced by Jon, a volunteer driver from Stoke Fleming.
A man from the village wanted to help Ukraine and donate an old dusty generator.
He Googled Ukranian Action and ended up getting a group together, picking up some vehicles and heading for Poland.
Adam takes up the story: “We've now raised money locally and bought 114 vehicles, all packed with humanitarian aid.
“With around 60 volunteer drivers, we've been driving vehicles about every two months into Ukraine, convoys of around five or six vehicles.
Adam went on to explain why he personally became involved: “I had seen so much on the television so when this opportunity came along, I really jumped at it.
“I had an instant connection with the rest of the drivers from the village.
“We were all keen to go again and then since then, I've been the one that's actually gone into Ukraine on a few occasions.”
Adam’s father donated a minibus to a local church before he died and they got back in touch wanting to donated it to Ukraine so Adam was able to take it there personally: “I thought I was going to hand over the keys to the contact in Dnipro and as soon as I arrived I had about two minutes to myself to sort of contemplate the journey that I'd made and I felt a bit emotional you know taking my dad's minibus that far.
“I was whisked away to this square and soldiers had put coloured photographs of their fallen comrades
“Then slowly relatives began to arrive and they started dressing these easels with jackets and helmets and and and then personal items like rings and watches and their medals.”
