People in the South Hams are being urged to take part in Rowcroft Hospice’s much-loved fundraising event.
The Big Tackle, is back for 2027 – bringing together hundreds of people for an eight-mile walk, plenty of rugby spirit and a chance to make a real difference to local families.
The eight-mile sponsored walk on Saturday March 13 2027 takes participants through Torquay and along the coast, starting and finishing at Torquay Rugby Club.
Once the walking is complete, the celebrations continue with a free pint and pasty and the live screening of the England v Scotland Six Nations rugby match.
Last March, more than 1,500 people took part in The Big Tackle, raising an incredible £150,000 – enough to fund more than 5,000 hours of specialist care during home visits by Rowcroft’s nurses.
Rowcroft Fundraiser Rachel Haime said:
“Every step at The Big Tackle matters.
“Behind every pound raised is a family who may need Rowcroft’s support at one of the most difficult times in their lives – whether that’s helping someone to stay at home with the people they love, or caring for those with complex needs in our Inpatient Unit, or supporting those left behind with bereavement.
“For many people, The Big Tackle is a chance to remember someone special.
“It’s a day to walk, talk and share memories, while knowing that your fundraising will help another local family receive the care and support they need.
The event is open to everyone aged eight and over.
The funding picture is particularly challenging for hospices in the South West.
While hospices across England receive around 40 per cent of their funding from the NHS on average, just 24 per cent of Rowcroft’s income comes from NHS funding.
That means the generosity of the local community plays a vital role in helping Rowcroft continue to provide specialist care to patients and their loved ones across South Devon.
Taking place on Saturday, March 13 2027, The Big Tackle is now open for sign-ups at: https://www.thebigtackle.org.uk
