River Dart Rotarian, Nick Hindmarsh, completed a 175 km charity walk, raising more than £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Nick was inspired by one of Dartmouth Caring’s clients, whose wife lives with Alzheimer’s, and by seeing the difference Dartmouth Caring’s Memory Café has made over the past 10 years.
As people live longer, memory-related health conditions are likely to affect more families.
Research is vital to improve the support available for our loved ones—and for ourselves—in the years ahead.
Nick set off from Dartmouth at 7am on the Friday and walked just over 50 km to Hope Cove.
After staying overnight in Hope Cove, he left at 8am on Saturday and continued along the coast path, travelling via Aveton Gifford before finishing in Ivybridge after a further 49 km.
On the third day, Nick walked from Ivybridge onto Dartmoor and across to Ryder’s Hill.
He then headed north before turning south through Ashburton and Buckfastleigh to reach Buckfast Abbey, bringing his three-day total to 143 km.
Ahead of schedule, Nick needed to cover only 31.5 km on the final day back to Dartmouth.
In fact, he walked 33.5 km, completing the challenge with a total distance of 177 km.
It is not too late to support Alzheimer’s Research UK. Every donation is greatly appreciated by both Nick and the charity.

Alzheimer’s Research UK says: “Towards a Cure marks a pivotal moment both for everyone affected by dementia and for us as a charity.
“Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer and 1 in 2 of us will be directly affected by it.”
“For many years, the situation has felt hopeless – but global optimism around new treatments and host of advances in research are now revealing a path to a cure.”
“With the right support and action, it’s a matter of when, not if, life-changing treatments arrive.”
