People are planning to gather at Totnes Market Square late this afternoon to protest against the government’s Crime & Sentencing Bill.

The event is billed as a positive celebration of what protest has achieved in history and why it is essential we defend the right to protest in the future.

The measures in the bill could include banning people from protesting, attending noisy protests and significantly increasing police stop and search powers.

Protestors will bring placards, banners and musical instruments and members of the Voices of Freedom choir will be leading a singalong in the Civic Square from 5.30pm until 6.30pm.

The protest will coincide with the third reading of the Bill in the House of Lords and follows other protests in places including London, Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol and Birmingham.
