PATRICK HAYMAN, of Washabrook Way, Kingsbridge, writes:

I was pleased to read in the paper that Kingsbridge Town Council have purchased a new set of goalposts for use at Duncombe Park, because considering the recent heavy rain the surface is holding up well and with the dark evenings now children can enjoy playing football or ball games at the weekends.

Some people soon forget the wooden kickboard situated there before with its permanent sea of mud – we now have a greatly improving park for all to use.

Instead of us accusing kids of being obese or always in front of computers lets encourage and enjoy them playing outside.

Many years ago when I was young we spent hours playing sport in the nearest farmers field or in the road, but don't try this now kids.

With no other open spaces available in or around the town since the loss of Ropewalk, and with Kingsbridge probably the only town in Devon and Cornwall with no football pitches resulting in junior and senior football clubs travelling miles out of town to play our national game, but don't get me started on that subject.

For now Duncombe Park will have to be used and enjoyed by all and I know its difficult for some but let's try and be positive that we have a park rather than an area of waste ground and celebrate some new apparatus rather than going backwards with jumpers for goalposts.
