Kevin Pyne, of Lake Street, Dartmouth, writes:
Here we go again as Devon County Council, despite having its vehicle parking plans for Dartmouth chucked out time and time again, is about to pitch in for yet another go.
Sure, parking is bad in Dartmouth, but it is bad for all of us.
There is no solution to the motor car, because if you make space for them they will fill it up as the numbers increase, and what’s more, recent Government reports on the health hazards of traffic fumes also mean that as cars drive around town, especially those towns in valleys, they are actively killing us.
When I drive, which is rare, I drive a diesel car, because the same Government that told us ‘it is the way ahead’ is telling us now that ‘it is not’.
The answer to Dartmouth’s traffic problems is that there is no answer, just a few public servants and officials looking to make money from those who are already paying more and more just to stay still. Oh, and who are they meeting with, because if it is our county and district councillors then we should sack them because they do not represent our views and it is time for change.
We chucked Barbary Coast slavers and Irish raiders back into the sea.
The Bretons stopped the Spanish Armada while our parents stood their ground against Nazism, and yet who comes into town to try to stab us in the back? No one other then our own cash-hungry county council, which yet again
gives us less while demanding more.
Clear off, I say, and if you have the time and energy then find us some money for a proper, full-size slipway here in Dartmouth, as it seems again and again that you are all of you long on promise and pitifully useless when it comes to action.
I feel similarly about the Wellcome Trust. It has billions and yet it is behind a mega-marina that is going to make a part of this river look like nothing we have ever seen before. Even if we can’t stop it, we should slow it up and make it pay for things we need desperately, or don’t let it have it at all, because it will soon catch on.
And how come the notices always go in the paper at regatta time or during Christmas, as this one has in a kind of ‘sneak it in when the natives are too busy to see it’ manner?
Car parking on the embankment works as it is, and if some guy wants to park a camper van that he has saved up for half his life on a road that he pays taxes for to look at our river for a few days, then bless him, I say.
Parking in this town since we lost our proper wardens is a mess at best and is made worse by those pouncing men and woman in black who are only after revenue, and in truth only seem to come when they might catch folk out and make a few bob for their superiors to waste on Lord knows what.
Just leave us be, county, because you see we do better without you or your mangled, twerpish ideas.
Ah, but we always have – it is just that we are stuck with you, even if we have little or no need of you.
