Dressed in their ‘lucky’ brand new kit, young Galmpton footballers kicked their opponents into touch to scoop a 24-0 win.

Galmpton Under 13s team beat Paignton Villa in the first outing in the new kit bought for them by Courtland Masonic Lodge.

Chris Chillcott, whose son Harry plays for the team, heard the youngsters were in desperate need of replace kits so contacted his fellow Paignton freemasons for help.

The masons raised £575 which was enough to supply 15 sets of kit plus an extra two sets for the coaches.

Masons spokesman Clive Eden said the new kit brought the team luck, adding: “Although to be fair they are already top of their league.”

Recalling the match, played on March 6, Clive added: “The weather was bitterly cold and very windy – hot drinks and bacon rolls were plentiful.

“For the first half, the team played up the pitch slope into a strong wind and by half time led by a slender 7-0. They increased the pressure in the second half and ran out 24-0 victors.

“The team have already won their league with matches still to play, so far not dropping a single point and have already reached the quarter finals of the county cup.

“The team’s management are Matt Billingham and Martyn Byrne; they have been excellent throughout with their coaching and drilled into the young lads to be ruthless when playing although always respectful of their opponents, which they are.”
