MR WAYNE LOCK, of Victory Road, Townstal, Dartmouth, writes:

On February 3 I lost my dear mum suddenly. She was 90 years old. I feel as if part of me went with her too, she was so special to me. I wanted to do something special for her.

She loved all kinds of music, so I decided to plan a funeral service around some of her favourite songs, not like a traditional funeral, something a little bit different.

But where do I start? I asked around Dartmouth, where I live, and two very kind people put me in touch with our local Baptist church at Townstal. The pastor and his wife, Andrew and Caroline Barton, were very obliging. I explained everything about what I wanted for my mum’s service and they said they would do it for me and my family.

Mum’s service started off with You Raise Me Up by Westlife followed by Amazing Grace and Wind Beneath My Wings, both sang solo on guitar by Andrew and Caroline. There wasn’t a dry eye anywhere; it was a truly amazing performance by both of them.

The final song, my mum’s all-time favourite song, I Want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner, finished the service.

Mum would have been very proud and it all went to plan.

The Baptist church put on a wake as well absolutely free. I don’t know how to thank

them enough – I’ll be eternally grateful to them.

I just want to say to everyone that the community spirit is still out there – you only need to ask.
