A legal secretary from Kingsbridge has raised more than £700 for Cancer Research UK by walking 423,600 steps throughout March.
Katherine Ewings, who works at Bartons Solicitors, raised £670 for the charity, with an additional £71.25 being donated through the Gift Aid scheme.
She said: “I am so pleased with the amount I have raised in just over one month. "This is a fantastic cause as we all know, and it is one which has affected me and my family so this really means a lot.
“I couldn’t have raised so much without all the support and generosity I have received from my lovely family, work colleagues and friends, so thank you all very much.”
Cancer Research UK organised the Walk All Over Cancer event for March - with the intention of participants raising money for the charity by walking 10,000 steps a day, every day of the month.
Katherine decided to increase her step count to 12,000 a day to make it more of a challenge, with the aim of raising £300 for the charity.
She baked cakes throughout the month, which were purchased by her colleagues at Bartons, who also contributed pink cakes and snacks to be sold for extra donations.
The solicitors firm also agreed to donate any fees given to them for the signing of affidavits, oaths and declarations in March.
On the last day of March, the whole office had a “pink day”, with the Dartmouth Ice Cream Company and Scoops Ice Cream Shop donating bags of sweets to be sold, with all funds raised being donated to Cancer Research UK.
Katherine also ran a £1 sweepstake so her colleagues could guess how many steps she would walk through the month, with the closest guess winning a bottle of Prosecco.
Katherine continued: “I hit my target of 12,000 steps every day by going to the gym and walking around Kingsbridge on my lunch hour.
“If I didn’t reach my step goal by the end of the day, I would have to walk on the spot at home whilst watching TV to ensure my target of 12,000 was reached!”
Katherine added: “I have raised over double my initial target! I’m so pleased, it’s for a great cause which means a lot to me and to a lot of others.”
