Artists will be throwing open their studio doors and inviting people to look behind the scenes.

Over 350 artists will be taking part in this year’s Devon Open Studios which takes place from September 12 to 20, with a range of free exhibitions, workshops and opportunities to see artists at work.

The art and craft on display will include drawing, painting, sculpture, tapestry, ceramics, jewellery and glasswork.

Artists range from emerging talent to experienced professionals, all keen to share their inspiration and creativity with visitors.

In Totnes Sarah Burt is one of five emerging artists have received bursary awards to support their participation in the event.

She is a printmaker who draws inspiration from the architecture and landscape of her local area, its history and natural beauty.

Sarah uses drypoint print techniques on old Tetrapak cartons donated by friends and family.

Staying in Totnes and four experienced potters are exhibiting their work together in a pottery in Totnes town centre: Georgi Gilpin of Georgi Makes, Caroline Wakelin of Wild Earth Pottery, Amanda Peters and Derryck Strachan.

They will be showing a wide array of tableware including Scandi-inspired colours, playful freeform colourful pieces, functional ceramics, and sculpture for indoors and out.

In Brownston you’ll find Rachel O’Connell. Marbling is an ancient surface pattern technique created by flicking inks or paints onto the surface of a water bath.

Marbling is on the Red List of Endangered Heritage Crafts, and Rachel O’Connell is one of fewer than 20 professional marbling artists in the UK.

Using traditional skills and a variety of marbling techniques, Rachel creates contemporary marbled homewares, including lampshades, cushions, tableware and vessels, as well as gift wrap, books, marbled leather goods and jewellery.

Rose Elliot is in Galmpton. Rose is an artist and designer who specialises in painting onto fabric.

She moved to Devon following a successful career in London creating hand painted garments for prestigious retailers, celebrity clients, and international customers. Rose took on a dilapidated boat shed and converted it into a studio, gallery that looks out onto the river Dart.

During Devon Open Studios, Rose will be sharing her venue with Allison McSparron-Edwards.

Allison is a portrait artist who works in oils, creating paintings which capture the essence of her subjects.

Each work reveals a moment, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of local people – and sometimes animals.

Allison had a career as a Chartered Accountant and Business Psychologist before she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time artist.

Her experience in psychology is reflected in her desire to capture the essence of the people she meets.
