A surprise tea party was held in Royal Avenue Gardens to thank retiring Dartmouth Royal Regatta committee member Dot Sheppard for her years of service. The event brought together current and former committee members, volunteers, friends and well-wishers, with sunshine for the celebration.

Dot has been a much-loved local figure in Dartmouth and a familiar face on the Regatta Committee for many years.

Born in Birmingham, she spent her early years in the Midlands before moving with her family to Dartmouth.

Throughout her time with the Regatta, Dot has taken on a variety of roles, from selling Grand Draw tickets and helping events run smoothly, including the Regatta Ball, to her most recent role providing teas and coffees in the Information Hut.

Always bringing warmth, humour and a little mischief, Dot has also become a familiar face in viral TikTok reels.

Reflecting on her time with the Regatta, Dot said:

“My time spent helping with the Royal Regatta has been rewarding and given me immeasurable enjoyment.

“The time has come for me to take life at a slower pace but I wish Regatta every success.

“Regatta is a wonderful event and brings such joy to so many.’

Under the watchful eye of special guest Bob The Cock, Dot was presented with flowers by former Regatta Chair, Ed Botterill.

Amelia Wright attended on behalf of new Regatta Chair Laura Campbell, who was unable to join the celebrations. Amelia will also be presenting Dot with souvenir photographs of the day in the coming days.

The celebration was a fitting tribute to a much-valued member of the Dartmouth Regatta family, whose commitment, friendship and good humour have helped make the event special for so many people over the years.

A spokesperson said “Thank you, Dot, for everything you have given to the Regatta.

“You will be greatly missed in your regular role, but we wish you every happiness.”
