This incredible photo shows a champion British surfer tackling treacherous eight-foot waves at Bigbury-on-Sea on one of the stormiest days of the year.

Noah Capps, 17, carved through choppy waters at the popular surf spot as winds of up to 60mph hit the UK on Saturday, August 10.

The picture was posted by Discovery Surf School who cancelled lessons amid a red flag from lifeguards.

Noah, who works as an instructor at Discovery, is a pro-surfer from Ringmore who studies A levels at Kingsbridge Community College.

He was joined in the water with three other “very experienced” surfers.

Annika Connolly, who runs the school with husband Martin, said: “The waves are eight-foot, which is almost as big as it gets at Bigbury and it’s very unusual to see waves like that at this time of year.

“It was a great spectacle to watch.

“The weather picked up on Friday and the surf was very big on Saturday.

“Gale force winds make it dangerous so the only surfers that go out in these conditions are very experienced.

“I would like to emphasise that. The surfers that went out are also lifeguards – they wouldn’t go out on their own.

“The boys said it was really challenging.”
