One of the biggest events of the year for Dartmouth is the Regatta Open, which attracts a large field from far and wide but unfortunately due to torrential rain yet again the competition had to be cancelled.
Vice captain David Thompson gave it as long as he could, but by 1pm the rain was still pouring down, which left him no choice. The competition will be rescheluded for later this month.
On Saturday, a new board event was played. Named the Geoff Penhale Olympic Tankard, the format is played as a greensome, the handicap is worked out by taking 0.6 off the lower handicap and 0.4 off the higher handicap. You then add the two together and play a stableford.
By taking the best tee shot of the pair a more relaxed air is created, which is just what Geoff wanted.
Also, any combination can be played from juniors, ladies, men's and seniors, again creating something different in the hope that it will attract more players to the club.
On the first day 20 players took part and all agreed that it was good fun and would gladly play it again. John Garner and Bob Wotton, Kevin Eighteen and Ian Metchette, Chris Eddowes and Gordon Kidd all came in with a good score of 36, but winning the tankard for the first time were Rob Barrett and David Brooking with a great score of 38.
Geoff was proud to present his tankard to them and declared that this was the only way he was ever going to get his name on the board.
On Sunday the final round of the Badger and Sandbanks trophy was played. The first second round was abandoned yet again due to the greens flooding.
Finally the weather calmed down and the course presented a fair challenge for the second round.
In the first round the results were 1 Chris Eddowes 82, 2 Mark Lord on countback 82, 3 Gordon Kidd on countback 82, 4 David Drooking 86 and 5 Colin Bell 90.
