Conditions were good but hard for the Wednesday circus, with the course playing long the odds again favoured the lower handicap players.
The back nine was shared between Sid Davis, Steve Owen, and Bob Wotton, who always seems to come up trumps when there's a large field assembled for action.
There can be no doubt, however, as to whose day it was.
Paul Marels has often been heard saying that there is little point in him playing as there are too many bandits in the field, but this time around good golf prevailed.
Paul won the front nine on his own with 19 and shared the lead overall with Andy Birss and Steve Owen on 36 points.
However, the jewel in the crown for Paul was that he recorded the only two out of all 24 players who competed.
The first round of the Daily Mail Foursomes was played at the weekend.
None of the players expected to play or even for the course to be open, but open it was and therefore the game went ahead as planned.
All but two pairs completed the course and all had never been so glad to get back to the club house to get warm.
Clive Westwood and John Wood played well and go through to the next round with a score of net 75.
Finishing in second place was Brian Mushens with 80, third Jack Kirby and Dave Nichols with 82, fourth Bob Wotton and John Garner with 81.5 and fifth Kevin Eighteen and Ian Metchette with 92.
