South Hams top tennis juniors Hugh Ryder (Dartmouth), Abigail Skelley (Ivybridge) and Erik Wilson (Newton Ferrers) were among the finalists at the Devon junior county closed championships writes Tony Atkins. Wilson was an impressive winner of the boys' 16 singles and justified his top seeding with victory over second favourite Pierce Widdecombe (Barnstaple) 7-6, 6-4 in the final. Dartmouth's Hugh Ryder was seeded five but fell in the last eight to Widdecombe 6-1, 6-0. Winner of two titles at Regatta tennis, Ryder was to reach the county final of the boys' 18 doubles alongside Erik Wilson, but they were beaten in straight sets by Patrick Daykin (Plymouth) and Lewie Parker (North Devon) 7-5, 6-1. In the girls' 18 singles, unseeded Abigail Skelley bridged a gap in the rankings to beat second seed Rebecca Ley (Torquay) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the quarter-finals. She went on to claim a first county singles title with victory over top seed Isabella Brown (Budleigh) 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.
