Dartmouth Rugby Football Club took a couple of teams down to Torpoint recently to attend St Columba and Torpoint's charity sevens tournament in aid of St Luke's Hospice.

Andrew Thompson, who used to play for DRFC, died of cancer in 2008, aged just 34, so the day had special meaning for a lot of the players involved.

Although the tournament was a sevens touch rugby event, it seemed a touch bizarre that it was played as six a side.

In all, there were 16 teams that entered, with matches played on two half-size rugby pitches.

Dartmouth took down two teams; team A, the Fishmongers, was managed by Dan Callard and team B, The Riversiders, was managed by Jeff Hunt.

Both sides played some good rugby, with Team A winning four games, drawing two games and losing two. Team B won four games, lost three and drew one game.

The games were 12 minutes each, and this provided a good physical challenge for the players ahead of the new season.

No doubt the legs from the players were feeling like lead weights the next day, but a good time was had by all and it raised much-needed cash for the charity.

The Fishmongers were very pleased to earn a draw against Plymouth Albion, but The Riversiders went one better and actually beat Albion, a terrific result which should do the confidence no harm whatsoever.

The boggy ground took its toll on both Dartmouth sides, but despite this, it was a good run out for the lads and all for a definitely worthwhile cause.

Anyone who would like to contribute towards St Luke's can contact Richard Darch at Dartmouth's Leisure Centre.

Dartmouth will be back in action on Saturday, August 18, with a home friendly against Tamar Saracens to start the 2012/2013 season.
