Based at Britannia Royal Naval College, two Royal Navy officers are set to cycle 900 miles in a bid to raise money for charity.

Sub Lieutenants Charles George and Luke Tupholme set off from Land’s End, Cornwall on Monday, March 5. They plan to make their way to John O’Groats via various Armed Forces locations, arriving at the most North-Easterly point of mainland Britain nine days later.

The cyclists are aiming to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity, a charity that provides support to serving and former members of the Naval Service and their families.

The two junior officers, who are currently training as a pilot and observer, joined the Royal Navy in September 2016 and commissioned as officers at Britannia Royal Naval College together in April 2017.

Charles has previous experience of long distance cycling after completing an ironman in September 2015, however for Luke, this will be the first time he has taken on such a demanding distance.

Both men came up with the idea whilst looking for a challenge which would allow them to share their interest in physical endurance, teamwork and of course, conducting events in support of good causes.

Charles said: “We are well aware of the sacrifices made by both serving individuals and their families. This is an excellent opportunity to both raise awareness of The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, through a challenging cycle, but also to give back to a charity which continually supports us, as part of the Naval Service.”

The cycle will take the pair through some of the UK’s most scenic, but challenging cycling terrain, passing Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor, the Wye Valley, Lake District and Scotland’s famous Glencoe and Loch Ness.
