Two photographers have been shortlisted in the Rotary district preliminary judging round competing against entrants from across Devon and Cornwall.

The two youngsters were winners from the Dartmouth round of the Rotary’s Young Photographer competition.

Held at Dartmouth Academy, the Rotary Young Photographer competition was judged by photographer Ginny Campbell.

She went through all the photos and judged them based on three sets of judging criteria including technical merit, content and composition plus imagination and style. This was all based on the theme this year, ‘The Beauty of Nature’.

Jesse Geen won the junior category at the competition in Dartmouth. The intermediate category was won by Archie French, followed behind by runner up Sophie Perry.

In the senior category, Eryn Harding came away with first prize, followed by runner up Kyeesha Bryson and Jordan Caple who finished in third place.

Freya Harding and Reuben Riley received special mention certificates for their entries in the intermediate section.

Two of Dartmouth’s three entrants for the district competition have made it to the next round.

Eryn Harding and Archie French were both shortlisted and their entries have been forwarded to the principal judge Ross Hoddinott.

Ross won the British Wildlife Photographer of the year competition in 2009 and is among the UK’s leading outdoor photographers.

The Rotary Club of Dartmouth’s competition organiser Trevor Branton said: “Like the song…Two out of three ain’t bad.

Thank you to all the entrants this year for taking part, you all did very well and the Dartmouth Rotary Club hope you keep up your hobby of photography.

“Thanks also to Dartmouth Academy for hosting the event and to Ginny Cambell for the judging of the competition and her very helpful synopsis of each winning entry.”

The entrants submitted a portfolio of three photos and each photo contributed to one third of an entrant’s total score.

Winners from each age group qualified for the district competition and the winners of this level will thusly go forward for the national competition.

The winners of each age group in the district competition will be invited to attend a photographic workshop with Ross Hoddinott in North Cornwall on Friday, March 15, from 12 noon to dusk.

This date is fixed and the prize is not transferable. Thus if the winners are unable to attend the runners-up will be invited in their place.

In March, Ross will be providing one to one tuition to the young photographers, supported by Peter and Caroline Bland of Silverlake Photography.
