An elderly sailor was in the sea for some 15 minutes after his sailing boat capsized half a mile off Beesands.

The man was spotted by crews on board the two South Devon College training yachts Endeavour and Aspiration at around 2.40pm on Thursday last week.

He was unable to get back on board the sailing boat and was very cold.

He was taken on board by Endeavour while his Topper sailing boat was taken in tow by the crew of the Aspiration.

The Dart inshore lifeboat was sent to the scene with paramedic Haydn Glanvill on board as part of the crew.

Mr Glanvill boarded the Endeavour and stayed with the rescued sailor until it arrived in Dartmouth.

The sailor was given a change of clothing and brought back to Dartmouth by Endeavour where he was checked over at Dartmouth Hospital.

The lifeboat crew were helmsman Squiff Howitt and crew Haydn Glanvill and Kevin John.
