SIXTH formers have been learning important lessons... by becoming the teachers.

The older students at Dartmouth Academy have been teaching the younger pupils in a scheme aimed at building a community spirit on the campus – and giving the 6th formers greater responsibility.

Gemma Bolwell, 6th form and alternative curriculum education specialist, said: 'This is great for the 6th formers, because they become role-models for the younger students,' she said.

'They are using knowledge they have acquired and learn to value that information more through this scheme.

'The younger students see what they could achieve and are inspired to work more because they can see someone older who they identify with showing enthusiasm and skill.'

The academy caters for youngsters aged from three to 19 years

Sixth formers are teaching all ages at the 'all-through' academy from primary through to GCSE.

John Lagdon, sixth form student and ICT specialist, has started teaching a group of Year 8 students to create their own websites.

Miss Bolwell said: 'He was very confident and dealt well with the student's queries.

'He is a really good role model because of his knowledge, focus and calm manner.'

John said: 'It is fun teaching others about technology, because it is something I enjoy and am good at.'
