The Met Office has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms in the South Hams.

The yellow warning comes into force at 10am on Monday, September 9, and lasts until 8pm at night.

It’s predicted 15 to 20mm of rain could fall within an hour and 30 to 40mm within a few hours.

The Met Office said scattered storms could cause power cuts and travel delays in some places.

There is also a small chance of property damage from lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Driving conditions could also be affected by spray, standing water or hail, leading to longer journey times.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “An area of heavy rain will turn more showery on Monday morning, with a risk of thunderstorms developing, which may be slow-moving in some places.

"Heavy showers and thunderstorms clearing away southwards early evening.

"Around 15 to 20mm of rain could fall within an hour and 30 to 40mm within three or four hours in a few places.

"Lightning and hail are also possible."
