I write to draw attention to the menace caused by garden bonfires.
Bonfires emit harmful pollutants, including particles, and can have damaging health effects, especially for the vulnerable, such as people with asthma, bronchitis or certain heart conditions.
A case in point occurred in Dartmouth on a beautiful clear sunny Sunday morning recently. From about 10am onwards, enjoyment for a significant number of local residents was spoilt by an inconsiderate householder in the South Ford Road area who decided it was a good day to light a very smoky bonfire.
I realise it is becoming more difficult to dispose of garden waste, but urge a small minority of householders to be aware that their actions may have a detrimental effect on other residents who are prevented from enjoying their gardens.
