Rotarian Bernard Young has received Rotary’s highest award, a Paul Harris Fellowship.

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute time, effort and outstanding work to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Bernard joined the Rotary Club of Dartmouth in 1998 and has served on various committees and held office as treasurer for two years.

He became vice president in 2001 and president elect in 2002. He then had a successful year as the club’s president in 2003/4.

He followed this by becoming the treasurer again for a few years before taking on his current role as International Chairman and Shelterbox fundraiser.

Bernard has been married for 49 years to Lyn and has two sons, Tim and Andrew, and a granddaughter, Ami.

Following academic study and a five-year technical apprenticeship Bernard enjoyed a wide-ranging and progressive career in the mining, aircraft, electrical power generation, water, railway and defence industries.

In 1996 he moved to Stoke Fleming to take up a senior management appointment at Britannia Royal Naval College, retiring in 2007.
