Dick Lloyd, of Sherford, near Kingsbridge, writes:

My letter published on July 8 was entitled ‘A hasty retreat is not on the cards’.

I refer to the riposte by Ms Suzanne Hine, of Loddiswell, and have this to say:

1. I did not make any derogatory remarks, as she implies, about those who voted for Brexit.

2. I have been involved in Europe for 65 years of my life, in various capacities, both business and social.

I speak several European languages and have a detailed personal experience of communism, which collapsed in 1989 and released millions of East Europeans from tyranny, and the hope of their being able to join the European Union has made a tremendous difference to their lives.

I suggest that Ms Hine’s 14 years as a tour manager does not compare with my long experience, and all my European friends deplore Brexit.

3. I respect those who disagree with me, but Ms. Hine demeans herself by resorting to insults.

However, her description of me as an ‘arrogant bigot’ caused much hilarity among my local friends at a recent party in Sherford Village Hall, so I have to thank her for that!
