This is where swimmers could soon be taking a £2.4m plunge.

Images of what Dartmouth's dream pool could look like have already been giving residents some food for thought at the town's Sainsbury store.

The poll project trustees have still to submit the detailed plans for the major pool scheme it is proposed to build alongside the town's leisure centre at Townstal.

Earlier this month the Dartmouth and District Indoor Pool Trust held a bag-packing fundraising session at the Sainsbury store, virtually opposite the pool site, which raised £259.

The cash will eventually go towards kitting out the pool.

The focal point of the day was the stand in the foyer which featured Totnes-based LED Architect's artistic impressions of the interior and exterior views of the pool.

Pool trust chairman Sir Geoffrey Newman, who manned the stand for the day said the images had generated interest from shoppers who stopped to ask questions about a host of topics including the size of the pool, its facilities, timescales for the build and the toddler facilities.

He said that the stand was set off by eye-catching banners featuring the trust's logo and slogan 'Dartmouth & District Indoor Pool Needs Your Support' which were sponsored by Kate Ryder of Alf Resco's and Nick Shillabeer.

He added: 'It was a very successful day not only because of the funds raised but also the awareness the event helped to raise within the community.

'It's clear there is a real desire to see the pool built and a thirst for information about its progress.

'The trust is grateful to Sainsbury's manager, Pete Bassnett and his staff for allowing the trust to raise funds for this vital community project, and for being so supportive'.

A further Sainsbury's bag-packing day has been organised for August 18, and soon it will be possible to view future fundraising events, pool news and images of the pool on the trust's website, which is currently being redeveloped by Big Bird Designs of Stoke Fleming, Sir Geoffrey explained.
