Kevin Pyne, of Lake Street Dartmouth, writes:
They say that there are some Caribbean islands where there are so many cruse ships waiting to land their passengers that the whole experience is now completely ruined.
I would question do we need to have super fantastic landing facilities that take up the entire seafront and on two tiers at that, Embankment pontoon funding bid rejected, February 8.
So what if it's a bit ad hoc – after all, our lovely Queen always used to get ashore in the days of royal visits on the so very missed royal yacht Britannia.
What you see as you come in from seaward to this port is to be cherished and, of all the ports I have visited, there was never one better or more beautfull. Can't we just leave it just that way?
With perhaps one or two very notable exceptions, I have spent as much time on the river as anyone and I just love it as it is. There is no need of the mega bland and mega grand solution when what we have is so beautifully unique.
If you ever follow the cruise ships, as they are skilfully brought into this harbour, you will see their passengers lined up around the ships' railings, loving it and the Dart experience as they click click away with their cameras.
I am convinced that they too just love it as it is.
