Kevin Pyne expressed his views on Britain in Europe in his customary verse, Gazette, April 1. I would like to ­comment in like manner, with a somewhat different view:

In the name of defence alone, Britain in Europe is the safer way.

That’s wrong.

Larger than EU, it is Nato’s shield whose planes and ships of grey

Stand strong.

Better the arithmetic of trade and immigration for us to play

Among.

But, as no one truly knows the facts, guess and gloom command the fray,

Ding dong.

And supposition still remains, where shall we best at end of day

Belong?
