DARTMOUTH'S vision for celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower is being presented at a meeting next month.
The group behind the 2020 project – expected to become a massive event both here and in America – is already planning the town's role in the pageantry.
And anyone who is interested in the history of town, or would like to become involved in the anniversary, is invited to a presentation of the group's aspirations in the Guildhall ballroom at 7pm on Friday, May 8.
The Mayflower and the Speedwell both docked for repairs in Bayard's Cove, Dartmouth, in 1620 before the Pilgrim Fathers set off on their epic voyage to the New World in America.
Anniversary group member Roger Chilcott said that the event was on course to becoming something very, very special.
'It may seem too early to be thinking about 2020 but this isn't going to be a two-day event with a few stands in Royal Avenue Gardens and some boats on the river at Bayard's Cove,' he said.
'We are aiming for a massive event to celebrate what was a truly important part of history.
'The Americans started their plans for the anniversary in 2004 and they are saying it will be the biggest event in their history.
'Although Dartmouth played a small role in this journey it was a significant one,' he added.
Early ideas are already being pursued but the group needs help from people with ideas and people who like getting involved in their community.'
Ideas include a costume plantation village in the gardens, a replica of the Mayflower vessel arriving in Dartmouth and strong links with neighbouring Plymouth where a massive celebratory programme is being planned.
