MRS H J NEWLAND, of Lower Broad Park, Dartmouth, writes:
Regarding Bob Hattersley's letter, May 11, I appreciate his concern about Dartmouth's future commercial success. However, his arguments are one dimensional.
Dartmouth is also a town where people live, people of all ages and social backgrounds, working, retired and unemployed, who need to use the banks, solicitors, estate agents, doctor surgeries and other local emenities, which are all currently located in the town centre.
They also patronise the buses, taxis, pubs, restaurants and shops 12 months a year, unlike visitors.
Is there to be no parking provision for people who live in Dartmouth and pay their council tax?
Should our hospitality to visitors extend to making life more difficult for local people, to ensure that some shops with marginal appeal to residents make a healthy profit?
It is not unknown for tourists to park on the embankment, sit in their cars, eating sandwiches brought with them and drinking flasks of coffee, contributing nothing to local businesses.
The slogan for the tourist information brochure Discover Dartmouth is 'A Town For All Seasons'.
Let's hope it doesn't become a town for summer only.
