DON PENGELLY, of North Embankment, Dartmouth, writes:
I trust that all Dartmouthians will join with me in congratulating local building firm RC Pillar on its craftsmanship in restoring the much-loved Gunfield Hotel in Castle Road, Dartmouth. It has given us a beautifully restored building well worthy of Dartmouth.
Now being unveiled at the other end of Dartmouth is the new Sails development. From my window it sits in the foreground to the magnificent Britannia Royal Naval College and is on top of two of our heritage buildings, the Ship In Dock Inn and the Old Bakehouse, with the Newcomen Engine House a short distance away.
As a prominent and important gateway to Dartmouth, all publicly visible main elevations should be pleasing to the eye, something at which this structure fails. As shown on the photograph, the large southern elevation has unsightly slot windows and visible service pipes running down the side – all of it an insult to the eye.
It is hoped that our local councillors and planning officers are pleased with their efforts, and as such our descendants and those of us who fought for Dartmouth in the last wars.
