Sue Pudduck, of Wood Lane, Kingswear, writes:
So the children of Kingswear are to get a second playground, costing around £35,000, surrounded by fencing and built on Jubilee Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
And this despite the fact that there are fewer than 10 children living in the village.
It seems very sad that grandparents – and it is all grandparents on the Kingswear playground committee – feel they have to give children ‘things’ to make them happy.
Great play was made of the fact that the schoolchildren were consulted.
Not surprisingly, when asked if they would like another playground and that they could help to design it, they are reported as being very enthusiastic.
What a pity nobody spoke to them about the very special green space they have in this village and asked them if they wanted a second playground or whether they would prefer to design an outside classroom, develop the area with bird and bat boxes and wildflower planting to attract butterflies and other wildlife, thus designing a very creative activity area.
Children are more environmentally aware than their parents, and far more aware than their grandparents.
After all, it’s their future on which we are impacting.
