A group of rowers, coxes and support crew rowing from Dartmouth to Guernsey for charity held a community event last week.

The rowing enthusiasts from Dart Pilot Gig Club were on the South embankment and at the Royal Avenue Gardens in Dartmouth last Saturday, June 23, to tell the community about their 142 mile rowing challenge.

To end the day, the team whizzed up the river to Dittisham for a bit more fundraising and met up with other crew members who had already rowed to Totnes.

Taking place from Friday, July 27, to Sunday, July 29, the row from Dartmouth to Guernsey is in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

The hospice is dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives through the provision of the best possible hospice care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions.

The team is hoping to raise £15,000 for the hospice and has already raised 25 per cent of the target. All donations are welcome on the Dart Gig Club Virgin Money Giving fund raising page.

Bob Lloyd from the Gig Club said: “Our cross-Channel team have a tough training programme which can be seen in action during the week and at weekends, with our gigs rowing on the river Dart and out to sea. We are training hard for this challenge.”

Laura Robertson, Community Fundraiser at CHSW said: “We are delighted the Club are embarking on this challenge for CHSW.

“They will be holding various fundraising events up until the day they set off; last Saturday (23rd June) the team were situated on the embankment with a gig, raising awareness of their mission. We hope the community will rally round and support them in their challenge.”
