Young people with learning disabilities raised more than £1,900 at their first ever supper club attended by VIP guest Totnes deputy mayor and other hungry diners.

Members of the Dartington-based Lifeworks Youth Group worked alongside Sima Cutting of the Kitchen Table to prepare and serve a sumptuous three course sharing feast at the Barrel House.

While tucking into the delicious dinner, guests were serenaded by local young musicians from Totnes-based Jam Buddies in collaboration with the Turning Tides Project.

Thanks to ticket sales along with a charity auction and the generous sponsorship of the Saracens foundation, the youngsters raised nearly £2,000 for the Lifeworks charity.

Totnes deputy mayor, Cllr Jacqi Hodgson, said: “It was such a delightful evening, and I really enjoyed meeting all those involved with Lifeworks.

“I would like to congratulate everyone on such a successful fundraising event.”

Parent Jane Cunningham hailed the event an “absolute triumph,” adding: “We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and took great pleasure in watching the young people fully participate in the whole evening.

“I was exceptionally proud of my own son Louis.

“Watching him take orders, serve and then the little speech he gave at the end…. It brought a tear to my eye.

“Thank you to everyone who has worked with Louis at Lifeworks Youth Club to bring out these qualities in him; I am so grateful”.

Parent Jane Roberts also enjoyed the fundraiser:

“The evening was absolutely fantastic,” she said.

“It was lovely to see the young people be involved and enjoying themselves.

“On the way home Kaine told us it was the best night he has ever had.”

Sarah-Jane Lowson, Lifeworks community programmes development mangager, said: “It’s great to see young people raise money for their club but as important, if not more, was seeing young people really hesitant at the beginning of the night increase with confidence and take control as the night progressed.

“They’ve learnt skills in event planning, event management, catering and their performance and speeches on the night was a delight.

“The event itself provided an important platform for young people with learning disabilities to connect with and integrate into their community.”
