DARTMOUTH’S open-air heated pool opens its doors to the public for its final season on Saturday.

When it closes in the autumn it will be replaced by the town’s new indoor swimming pool currently under construction.

Outdoor pool chairman David Bond said: ‘This year will be the very last year the Dartmouth open-air pool will be in existence and although we are all excited about our long-awaited indoor pool, it is with great sadness we shall close the door on a long era of outdoor swimming.

‘Many, many children have learned to swim here and since 1988 the summer season has been enjoyed by many Dartmothians.

‘Nothing beats swimming beneath a blue sky with the warm water heated to 28C-30C shimmering in the sunlight.

‘Outdoor swimming has become a fast-growing leisure activity in rivers and the sea.

Mr Bond said a few faithful supporters had volunteered each summer to give up their time to run the pool.

‘We thank them all wholeheartedly,’ he said. ‘So do come along to enjoy the summer months this year. There are adult sessions, kids sessions and school sessions. Lessons are available and trained lifeguards are on duty at all times.

‘Snacks and soft drinks, tea and coffee are always on offer, grassy banks to sunbathe on and hot showers in the changing rooms. Make the last season one to really enjoy.’

District councillor Hilary Bastone, who was pool treasurer during the fundraising and building of the pool and changing facilities in the 1980s, said: ‘It’s hard to believe that this wonderful pool will close at the end of the season. Those who have managed the pool over the years have done a tremendous job and achieved so much.

‘The pool has been a truly magnificent asset for the town and, like the chairman, I find it extremely sad. I therefore appeal to everyone to make good use of the pool this summer.’

During half-term week the pool will be open 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, with adult sessions available every day except Saturday.

Timetables will be available from reception. Contact details for the pool are 07779 935970 or email [email protected].
