The junior section of Dartmouth's 59-year-old rugby club could be kicked into touch because not enough youngsters want to play.

The club's under-12 side has already been axed because there were not enough players to make up a team.

Now the under-9s, under-10s and under-11s are at risk.

Club secretary Liz Chandler has warned that unless the club can attract more youngsters by Christmas they will have to be axed as well.

'We think that one of the problems is that people don't know about the club,' she said. 'Another is that they think they have to commit to a match every week and that isn't so. It's not that regular – no more than two matches a month.'

Now the club is holding an extraordinary meeting at the Dartmouth leisure Centre at 6.30pm next Friday when it is hope to set up a new committee and launch a recruitment drive for young players.

Liz said that would include becoming more involved with local schools.

'We need new players across all age groups,' she added. 'Anyone who can help can contact Lisa on 07701048363 or email [email protected]">[email protected].
