Some 25 cadets from the Britannia Royal Naval College visited Dartmouth Academy to run a sports day.

There were several team-building games including relay races, egg and spoon races, obstacle courses and bucket ball, a game often played on the flight deck of a ship where there is limited space.

Around 40 students from Years 5 and 6 had great fun cheering each other on throughout the games.

There was also a navy display stand where students could try on uniform and view equipment such as ration packs, as well as squeezing into a two-man tent to get an insight into life in the forces.

BRNC cadet Dan Chandos-Hall said: ‘As part of training at BRNC, cadets engage in a community outreach project of their own choosing.

‘This enables the college to give something back to Dartmouth as a thank you for the support and understanding of the community.

‘As sport is a huge part of naval training, Victorious Division wanted to engage with a local school to run a sports day and Dartmouth Academy was more than happy to get involved.

‘They’ve been really welcoming and most importantly the students have had great fun.’

The academy said it was keen to strengthen the links between the school and the naval college and felt lucky to have the BRNC as part of the local community.

A spokesman said the cadets were impressed with the students positive attitudes and commented on how well looked after the school grounds were.

Year 5 teacher Rosie Mears said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to expand our students’ skills in team building and collaborative working, as well as strengthening the links between the school and the naval college.’

Year 6 teacher Jack Pemberton said the sports day acted as a reward for all the students’ hard work leading up to their SATs tests in May.

He said: ‘It’s a great way to inspire our youngsters and show them the importance of teamwork.’

Students were presented with certificates and the winning team received a gold cup.
