Arthur N Johnson, of Kingsway Park, Kingsbridge, writes: On Thursday, May 22, our politicians will be hoping we vote for them. I am not a member of any political party and will not ask readers to vote for any party, instead I am asking your readers not to vote for our current crop of politicians from the main parties. In the past, our politicians, no matter which party they were from, had an understanding of history, economics and, yes, politics! The present intake of politicians are careerist lightweights in comparison by any measure, they have jettisoned conviction politics for soundbites. The only time they show any sign of passion is when the expenses trough is pushed in front of them. These are my reasons: The Conservatives were led by a great lady who won a war; defeated and shackled militant trade unions; and enacted policies that led to the prosperous free society we now live in and enjoy. The present leader, David Cameron, for most people will be remembered for hugging hoodies; stating the USA helped us in the Battle of Britain; and best of all allowing men to marry each other! The Labour Party was led by statesmen such as Aneurin Bevan, the founder of the NHS, and despite most people not agreeing with them, people such as Tony Benn and Michael Foot who argued with a passion and a vision. The present Labour leader, Ed Miliband is a poor imitation of the spin meister Tony Blair. Miliband has, like Cameron, no depth to him. He is like Blair – a nice image who says something – leftish soundbites – now and again to rally his own supporters and grab the headlines. Nick Clegg, funnily enough, is an open, proud, conviction politician who is devoted to his beloved country – the European Union. But he let down many of his supporters and voters by getting elected on the basis of opposing student fees then, when elected, promptly joined a government that supported student fees. This betrayal caused a massive shock to many Lib-Dem voters, some of whom now tell me they will never vote for them again. And here is the best reason of all not to vote for the Lib-Lab-Con Party – they are all Europhiles committed to that hugely expensive bureaucratic war machine the European Union. It was the European Union's lust for expansion and active subversion of the democratically elected Government of the Ukraine that has led to the present disaster there, and loss of life. It is hugely ironic that the EU's unelected foreign policy chief Cathy Ashton, along with other pro-EU subversives, turned up in person to cheer on the pro-EU demonstrators against the anti-EU government of the Ukraine. Why ironic? Because Cathy Ashton was once a leading member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, yet her and the EU's actions are now resulting in the real threat of global nuclear war. I ask the electorate of south Devon to not vote for these dense, morally bankrupt, financial spivs and warmongers, so that you and your children have a future. The choice is yours.
