Dartmouth Caring gave a presentation before the film was viewed on Wednesday, October 18, about its impact in Dartmouth and what the charity is trying to do to mitigate its impact. Supporters, volunteers and members of the public turned up to hear from Dee Nutt, Chair of the charity explain why Dartmouth Caring sees this a key issue for our area.
In her introduction Dee said: “Researchers have put a financial price on the epidemic of loneliness estimating it costs £6,000 per person in health costs and the pressure it places on local services. The LSE study of older people says that for every pound spent in preventing loneliness there are £3 of savings to be gained.
“It has been estimated that 1.2 million people in the UK experience chronic loneliness and this links to their poorer physical and mental health and the associated increase in the use of GP’s, hospitals and social services. Researchers say we could save up to £3.6bn per year by preventing loneliness.”
After the film, Nick Hindmarsh, Manager of the charity took questions and answers form the audience. He said later “I am delighted with the response here today and online to this call to arms. We have already had five new volunteers stick their hands up and offer to support the work we do.”
The film can be viewed at www.dartmouthcaring.co.uk and if anyone would like to offer their help and time Nick reiterated the message at the end of the film “we would be delighted to hear from anyone, just call or pop into the office.”
