In 1974, all of the responsibilities of Dartmouth Borough Council could have been ceded to South Hams Council, but the town chose to retain control of many of its finest assets: the Boatfloat, the Butterwalk, the Market and the Guildhall.

These are many of the things that our visitors come to see, but cost a great deal to maintain each year. If the responsibility for these buildings had been given up 40 years ago, Dartmouth tax-payers would still be paying for their upkeep through District Council taxes, but would have far less say concerning their use.
