A Dartmouth conservation campaigner begins her drive to remove plastic waste from the Dart and South Hams coastline by screening the award-winning film ‘A Plastic Ocean’ on Thursday, September 28th at the Flavel.
This screening of the film has been commissioned by conservation volunteer, Penny Woollams who said: “Some years ago I saw a presentation on the ‘plastic islands’ by Dame Ellen MacArthur which left a lasting impression on me.
“Since then, and living in the busy coastal town of Dartmouth, I realise I’m not alone in caring about marine health. So I hope this film will launch a united effort to better protect our shared environment, on land and sea.
“Sir David Attenborough said of this film: ”this is one of the most important films of our time”. The adventure documentary is a revealing account of the eight million tonnes of plastic that enters the seas annually. Filmed in 20 locations, it reveals the impact on marine life and the inevitable impact on our global food chain.

Well-known local marine campaigner, Sir Geoffrey Newman, former Chairman of the Marine Conservation Society, will say a few words before the film at 7.30pm.”
The event’s key sponsor is The Venus Company whose Managing Director, Michael Smith said, “This is a powerful film that highlights the fragility of the seas. I hope that people will look at the disposal of plastics in a different light.”
Penny continued saying: “The film comes just as the Dartmouth Food Festival which runs from Friday, October 20th to Sunday, 22nd, has taken the bold step to be plastic-free. Switching to compostable materials and packaging will show a good example to others on better waste management.
