SHIRLEY BENNETT, of Jubilee Road, Totnes, writes:

I have been reading with interest of your story of the grave found under a holly tree at Dartmouth Cemetery.

The last of the three brothers that were killed in the great war was my great grandfather Edwin John Burnell, which was my surname before marriage. His son John William Burnell (my father), now deceased, also served in the forces during the Second World War.

He was in the Royal Navy and served on the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious, which was scrapped, and a new Illustrious was built.

I have three children, eight grand children and four great-grandchildren, although unfortunately the Burnell name hasn't carried on, at least my dear great grandad did leave something behind!
